01 Mar Grand Prix February: 2019
Helmet of the Month
We’re now two months into Helmet of the Year 2019 and February was another one filled with excitement. With a top heavy class from the usual suspects and a huge tie from third to sixth position all coming in at 89 |. February also had a few painters break into the points in the first time of their career.
The class of the month came in towards the end with an already strong top 10. New Zealand’s Mitch Baker Design wrapped up their 24 hours with a final rating of 90.1 which was only .1 ahead of second position. Mitch of MBD quoted “I didn’t know which helmet to share, we had been a little bit behind with sharing helmets that when it came to choosing one for FEB, it wasn’t easy. We had wondered if we made the right decision as the top ten looked tough already.”
Taking a strong 18 points to their 2019 campaign was defending World Champion Rstar Designs of Australia with their solid 90.0. Rstar Designs collects another podium to their name and looks to slowly rebuild their case for the 2019 World Championship. After a sixth place finish in January this defintely doesn’t lose them any ground to the top positions.
The top 6 helmets this month were all within a mere 1% in voting as third through to sixth came down to tie breakers. Edging everyone out and rounding up the podium was Germany’s 5star Designs with a respective 89.1. Fourth and fifth were the Argentinian duo of Daniel Mascolo and Nico Affin who have made huge strides in recent months trending towards the top. Both painters were involved in the tie breaker as well coming in at 88.8 and 88.6 respectively. Unfortunate luck and a few late votes sent American powerhouse Censport Graphics from third to sixth and finishing up with their 88.5.
Seventh was a late follower submission from Germany and broke into the top ten on the final day of the month. JMD Helmets pushing BDesign of France just out of position for points this month. Eighth position was Italy’s Aerostyle who also missed out in a tie breaker to JMD by .8 after 24 hours.
Rounding up the top ten was one of America’s top painters within the stock car world of Beam Designs. They brought out a brand new Stilo ST5 for top driver Jimmy Johnson. Making their top ten debut after a full season without points was the United Kingdom’s R.Grace Design. They went all in on a custom helmet for 2019 to display their ability in the studio and it paid dividends launching them into the top ten early in 2019.
This was such an interesting Grand Prix all month long as one of the top helmets was almost pushed out. Rstar Design finished the month with the ninth most likes and was close to on the bubble nearly costing them 18 World Championship points.
The near misses this month were also World Championship contenders and even January Grand Prix winner Polen Designs. Polen Designs of America came in just outside the top ten being bumped with the likes of Brazil’s TMA Designs, and some of France’s top painters BS Designs and Bdesign.
As we get the 2019 campaign rolling we look to have a very close championship. With lead changes and unpredictability of the essence. As March comes to town we will also begin to see many top racing helmets being unveiled for the season and push us right into all of our 2019 helmets.
Before we wrap up the Grand Prix of February, let’s take a look at this month’s top helmet as voted by the culture.
